From Islamabad it's a short drive, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours up the Murree Expressway (about 60 km). From Lahore, expect around 5 to 6 hours by road, usually via Islamabad. There's no airport in Murree itself, so the nearest is Islamabad (ISB) and most people carry on by car, van or coaster. The roads are paved the whole way, so you don't need a jeep for Murree town; a 4x4 only helps if heavy snow has settled on the higher stretches toward Patriata.
There are two peaks: summer (May to August), when families head up to get away from the heat, and the snow season (roughly December to February), when the town and Patriata get their heaviest falls. Both are busy and traffic can crawl on weekends, so go midweek if you can. Spring and autumn are quieter and still pleasant, just cooler and greener.
Walk the Mall Road for food, shopping and the viewpoints. Ride the chairlift and cable car at Patriata (New Murree) for forest and valley views. Wander the pine forests around Kashmir Point and Pindi Point, and if you have an extra day, carry on to Nathia Gali and the Galyat for cooler air and easy hikes.
Most visitors stay near Mall Road for easy access to the food and the promenade, though it's the busiest and priciest part of town. For quieter nights, look at guesthouses and hotels around Kashmir Point, Bhurban or along the Expressway approach. In peak summer and on snow weekends, book ahead, because rooms fill up and rates climb.
