Estimate a flight's CO₂ before considering an offset

Start with a transparent estimate, reduce avoidable flying where practical, and only then judge a carbon credit by its project and retirement record. This guide keeps those three decisions separate.

Use a calculator that explains its method

The International Civil Aviation Organization says its Carbon Emissions Calculator uses a globally harmonised methodology. It considers aircraft types, route data, passenger load factors, cargo and cabin-class occupancy to estimate the CO₂ assigned to a passenger.

That is more defensible than multiplying a rough route distance by a single universal emissions factor. Travel.pk therefore links to ICAO's current calculator instead of publishing a made-up route score or a fixed number of “trees”.

What the ICAO number can—and cannot—tell you

It estimates passenger CO₂

The result is designed for air-travel CO₂ reporting and offset planning.

It uses averages

Aircraft, traffic and load data make the estimate stronger, but it is not a meter reading from your particular flight.

It is not a complete climate score

ICAO says its calculator is limited to CO₂ released by aircraft engines and does not add a multiplier for non-CO₂ effects.

It does not endorse a seller

ICAO explains that offset quality varies and does not recommend a particular commercial service.

A reproducible three-step estimate

Keep the calculation and purchase records. They are useful for a personal trip and essential when a company is comparing travel reports across months or teams.

Map every flight segment

Enter the actual origin and destination airports for each leg. A connection is two flights, so estimate both segments rather than treating it as one direct trip.

Choose the cabin you booked

Cabin class changes how the aircraft footprint is allocated per passenger. Use the class printed on your ticket, not the lounge or loyalty tier.

Save the method with the number

Record the calculator, date, itinerary, passenger count and whether the result is one-way or return. That makes the estimate understandable later.

Before paying

Four questions for an offset seller

Name the programme and project

A vague “green contribution” is not enough. Ask for the programme or registry, project name, project location and unit type.

Ask what the payment buys

Separate the price of the carbon units from any service fee and confirm how many tonnes of CO₂-equivalent the purchase represents.

Get cancellation or retirement evidence

The written record should show that the units were taken out of circulation for the stated journey or buyer, rather than left available for resale.

Use careful language

A credit can finance climate action; it does not remove the aircraft’s exhaust or make the flight emission-free.
