How do I get to Swat from Islamabad or Lahore?+
From Islamabad, Mingora (the main town) is roughly a 5-7 hour drive of about 250 km, much of it on the Swat Motorway (M-16) before the valley road up to Mingora. From Lahore, add the Islamabad leg first for around 10-12 hours in total. Kalam is another 2-3 hours up the valley beyond Mingora, and the rough final stretch to Mahodand Lake needs a 4x4 jeep. Saidu Sharif airport (SDT) near Mingora exists and sees occasional flights, but schedules are limited, so most travellers drive and keep any flight as a backup rather than the plan.
When is the best time to visit Swat?+
April to October is the main season. Spring and summer are green and mild, ideal for Kalam, the meadows and the drive up the valley, though the high jeep track to Mahodand Lake usually only clears from around June. Malam Jabba draws skiers in winter (roughly December to February) when the slopes get snow, but heavy snowfall can close the upper Kalam road, so check current conditions before you set off.
What are the top things to do in Swat?+
Base yourself in Mingora, then work up the valley. The highlights are Malam Jabba's ski resort and chairlift, the alpine Kalam valley, the jeep trip to Mahodand Lake, and the waterfalls and trout streams around Bahrain and Kalam. History lovers can explore Swat's Buddhist (Gandhara) heritage, including the Butkara stupa and the Swat Museum in Mingora, which hold some of the region's finest relics.
Where should I stay in Swat?+
Mingora and neighbouring Saidu Sharif have the widest choice of hotels and are handy for the museum and the lower valley. For the mountains, base in Kalam or Bahrain, which have plenty of riverside hotels and guesthouses from simple to comfortable. Malam Jabba has a couple of resort-style hotels near the slopes. Rooms fill fast in summer and on long weekends, so book ahead.
