How do I get to Chitral from Islamabad or Lahore?+
By road it's roughly a 12–14 hour drive from Islamabad (around 400 km) via Chakdara, Dir and the Lowari Tunnel, which now keeps Chitral reachable through winter. From Lahore, drive or fly to Islamabad first, then continue up. PIA also flies Islamabad to Chitral (CJL) — a short, scenic hop, but it's very weather-dependent and cancels often, so keep a road plan B. Reaching the Kalash valleys or Shandur adds a few hours more on rough jeep tracks.
When is the best time to visit Chitral?+
May to October is the best stretch, with warm valleys and open roads. Time it with the Kalash Chilam Joshi festival in May, or the Shandur Polo Festival in July, when teams and crowds gather at the world's highest polo ground. Winters are cold and snowy — the Lowari Tunnel keeps the town reachable, but higher routes like the Shandur Pass close.
What are the top things to do in Chitral?+
The main draw is the Kalash valleys — Bumburet and Rumbur — home to the ancient Kalash people and their festivals. Beyond that, take in views of Tirich Mir (the highest peak of the Hindu Kush), cross the Shandur Pass toward Gilgit, wander Chitral town's old fort and Shahi Mosque, and unwind in the Garam Chashma hot springs.
