Walking the Walled City of Lahore: history under your feet
I spent a day exploring the old Walled City of Lahore on foot, from Delhi Gate to Wazir Khan Mosque. Here is how to do it right.

I am a bit of a history nerd, and the Walled City of Lahore had been calling me for years. Last spring I finally gave it a full, slow day on foot, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding days of travel I have had inside Pakistan.
Starting at Delhi Gate
I began at the restored Delhi Gate and walked the Shahi Guzargah, the Royal Trail the Mughal emperors once used. The conservation work here is genuinely impressive — old facades brought back to life, hidden havelis, and craftsmen still working in the same lanes their families have for generations.
Wazir Khan Mosque stopped me in my tracks
Nothing prepares you for Wazir Khan Mosque. The tilework — the blues, the calligraphy, the floral panels — is, I think, the most beautiful in all of Pakistan. I sat in the courtyard for nearly an hour just looking. Climb the minaret if it is open; the rooftop view over the old city is unforgettable.
The rest of the day
- Tea and a snack in a tiny old-city café, watching the lanes go by.
- The Lahore Fort and the mirrored Sheesh Mahal in the afternoon.
- Sunset at the Badshahi Mosque, which glows pink as the light drops.
Practical notes
The Walled City lanes are narrow, crowded and easy to get lost in, which is part of the charm but can be overwhelming. I hired a local guide for half the day for a modest fee, and it was the best decision — the stories behind the buildings made everything come alive. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and go in the cooler months; this is not a summer-afternoon activity.
What it cost
A guide, entry tickets, food and ride-hailing to and from my hotel came to under PKR 8,000 for the day. Extraordinary value for the amount of history I packed in.
Tips
- Start early to beat both the heat and the crowds.
- Dress modestly; you will be entering mosques and shrines.
- Hire a local guide — the Walled City is best understood, not just walked.
- Keep your phone and wallet secure in the busy lanes.
If you love history, the Walled City is the real soul of Lahore. Give it an unhurried day, and let the centuries underfoot tell their stories.
